Sometimes the built in interfaces are not enough. Then it pays to build your own endpoints that deliver exactly what your application needs.
When custom endpoints make sense
Custom endpoints make sense when you need data in a special shape or combine several sources into one response. That way you avoid many small requests.
The basic structure
An endpoint essentially consists of three parts that you separate cleanly.
The route that defines path and method
The controller that receives the request
The structured response in a clear format
Validate input
Never blindly trust input from outside. Validate every parameter and return helpful error messages when something is missing.
Safe and understandable
Protect your endpoints with the intended mechanisms and document them for other developers. Good documentation saves many questions later.
Conclusion
Custom endpoints give you freedom without bending the system. Built cleanly they stay maintainable even as demand grows.
